Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal has said no one should underestimate the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). He made the remarks at around 11:30 am on Wednesday (January 26).
Earlier, he broke the agitating students' hunger. At that time, he called Vice-Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed a 'monster'.
Asked why he was leaving the students with the monster, Zafar Iqbal told City News Dhaka, "Do not underestimate the students. You will understand in time who I leave students to.”
At the time, he told students, ‘I am an outsider on campus, not even a representative of SUST. Despite this, I request you to give all your demands in writing. I will talk to the authorities to implement them.’
Earlier, around 4 am, Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and his wife came to see the students on hunger strike. They talked to them. He requested to break the fast. At that time, the students agreed to break the hunger strike if he promised to be by their side.
On January 19, from 3 pm, 24 students went on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. Meanwhile, a family member of a student who went on hunger strike fell ill so he returned home. Later last Sunday, five more students joined there.
They announced that they would continue their hunger strike until the Vice-Chancellor resigns. However, the students have taken an oath to continue the movement till their demands are met.
