Of the 20 convicts sentenced to death in the Abrar Fahad murder case, 17 filed jail appeals seeking acquittal. A dual bench of the High Court is likely to hear the case on Wednesday (January 26).
The death reference of the case reached the High Court on January 6. According to the Criminal Procedure Code, if a person is sentenced to death in a judicial court, all the proceedings of the case have to be sent to the high court for approval. In addition, convicts can file criminal and jail appeals in the high court.
Mehedi Hasan Russell (24), Mohammad Anik Sarkar alias Apu (22), Mehedi Hasan Robin alias Shanto (23), Ifti Mosharraf Sakal (20), Mohammad Moniruzzaman Monir (21), Meftahul Islam Zion (23), Mohammad Majedur Rahman Majed (20), Mohammad Mujahidur Rahman Mujahid (21), Khandaker Tabakarul Islam alias Tanvir (21), Hossain Mohammad Toha (21), Mohammad Shamim Billah (21), Mohammad Sadat ASM Nazmus Sadat (21), Muntasir Al Jamie (20), Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Mizan (22), SM Mahmud Setu (24), Samsul Arefin Rafat (21), Mohammad Morshed alias Morshed Amartya Islam (20) have appealed for jail.
The other accused Ehteshamul Rabbi alias Tanim (20), Mohammad Morshed Uzzaman Mandal, Prakash Jisan (22) and Mujtaba Rafid (21) are fugitives.
The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Amit Saha (21), Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna (21), Mohammad Akash Hossain (21), Muhtasim Fuad (23) and Mohammad Moaz alias Moaz Abu Horaira (21). It is unknown at this time whether they file a jail appeal or not.
On December 8, a court sentenced 20 people to death and five to life imprisonment in the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad. Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 sentenced the verdict.
