The much-discussed draft of the Election Commission (EC) Constitution Bill has been tabled in Parliament. The bill was introduced by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque in the 16th session of the 11th National Assembly at 11 am on Sunday(January 23).
Once the bill is tabled, it will be referred to the relevant parliamentary committee for further scrutiny. This information was gathered from the agenda of the Sunday session given on the parliament's website.
Following a five-day break, the 16th session of the Eleventh National Assembly resumed under the chairmanship of the speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury at 11 o'clock on the day.
The bill is being brought for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioner (EC) as per Article 118 (1) of the Constitution. The term of the current EC headed by KM Nurul Huda is coming to an end on 14 February. Before that, the president has to form a new commission. In that case, the law has four weeks to raise and pass in the National Assembly and to publish in Gazette.
Earlier, on January 17, the cabinet gave policy and final approval to the draft of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Appointment Act-2022.
