Hundreds of students formed human chain on the highway in Dhaka's Savar area as they could not be enrolled to school. Their parents along with students also took part in this human chain.
Students seeking admission in Savar Adharchandra High School formed demonstration on Monday (January 10) at noon on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the vicinity of Savar Thana.
Parents who took part in the human chain said, "Our children have been educated at Adharchandra School at primary level. As they graduated 5th class, the are supposed to get promoted to 6th class. This has been going on since the beginning of school. But this time about 72 of our children are not getting the opportunity to get admission in that school. We talked to the school authorities through various means a few days ago. On that day, they promised to enroll our children at January 10th. But when we went to school today, January 10, the school authorities refused to enroll our children. Their decision leaves the future of our children uncertain. "
Annie, a mother of twins named Tasmia and Fahmida, said "My two children have been in the primary school for about six years. But today we have been expelled from that school along with our children. '
Momena Khatun, the guardian of another student Abdur Rahman, said, "The authorities promised to enroll our child in this school. I went to different places including school from 9 am but could not find any solution. Assured by the school authorities, I did not collect the admission form in any other school. Now I cannot enroll my child in any school. In this tension, I went to different places from 9 am today and became physically ill. '
Student Selim says, ‘Madame Rokeya told us that even a lottery happens, we can be enrolled here. But now I cannot be admitted. It will take 10 to 12 thousand taka to take admission in another school. My family will not be able to bear this money. If cannot get admission, why they assure me? If I am not admitted here, I will never enroll. '
When contacted on the mobile phone of Rokeya Haque, the headmaster of Adharchandra Government High School, a man named Chandan identified himself as her son and said, "Mother is ill. She cannot talk now. She is hospitalized."
Ratan Peter Gomez, headmaster of Adharchandra Government High School, said it was actually a government process. Those who got a chance in the lottery have been admitted. Those who did not get the chance are creating pressure for admission in various ways. However, parents claim that if the lottery process was transparent, their children would get a chance.
