Marking the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon-2022, traffic has been stopped at the entrances of Hatirjheel in the capital. This has caused long traffic tailbacks in the capital. Office-going passengers suffer due to shortage of transport.
Traffic on the road will be closed on Monday (January 10) from 4 am to 1 pm. On the occasion of the marathon, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has requested the motorists in the Hatirjheel area to use alternative roads. This has increased the traffic pressure on the surrounding roads.
It is learned that the marathon team starts its race from Army Stadium, then crosses Kamal Ataturk Avenue through Kakoli, then crosses Gulshan-2, Gulshan-1 and finishes at Hatirjheel. Traffic on that road will be temporarily closed until the marathon passes through Hatirjheel. The road will be opened as soon as the marathon crosses any road. For this, the DMP has requested the drivers in the area to follow the diversion.
According to the DMP, the vehicles that want to go to Gulshan, Banasree, Rampura, and Badda through Hatirjheel through Rainbow Crossing on Monday should use become Moghbazar and Mouchak. Vehicles wishing to pass through Hatirjheel via Rampura U-Loop and Islam Tower should use Gulshan-Badda Link Road. Vehicles wishing to pass through Hatirjheel in different directions through Police Plaza should use the road between Police Plaza and Shooting Club through Badda Link Road.
As the Hatirjheel road is closed, the traffic pressure has increased in Pragati Sarani. There are long traffic tailbacks on this road and vehicles are moving slowly in some places. Besides this, additional traffic jams were also reported on Rampura, Malibagh, Magbazar, Jahangir Gate, Khilkhet, and Airport roads.
Haider Hossain from Gulshan Link Road reported intense traffic congestion since morning. "Many roads are closed for marathons which put extra pressure on other roads. It would take a long time to get through the bus, so I wanted to take a water taxi. When I came I saw that there was a notice to stop the movement of water taxis. I have had to suffer a lot due to the heavy traffic since morning."
Nuruddin, a private employee who came to Gulshan from the Paltan, said, "I walked 2 hours where I was supposed to do in 30 minutes. I could not attend the office on time."
Ashraf Ali, the driver of Baishakhi Paribahan from Savar to Mohakhali's Amtali, said, "I have experienced severe traffic jam from Gabtali to Mohakhali. I have to pass most of the way with a slow pace."
Traffic police officer Mahafuzul Islam, who is in charge of additional traffic congestion on the road, said the number of vehicles on the surrounding roads has increased since morning as some roads in Hatirjheel were closed due to the marathon. So there is some traffic jam on these roads. Hopefully, traffic congestion will decrease afternoon.
The Traffic Department of DMP has sought the cooperation of all to maintain order in the movement of vehicles and avoid traffic jams during the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon 2022.
