At least 100 people have been killed in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike on a prison in Yemen's Saada Province. Hundreds of people were injured. The death toll could rise as rescue operations continue, local authorities said. The attack took place on Friday (January 21) night.
Yemen's Houthi government's health minister, Taha al-Motawakkel, told the AFP news agency that hundreds had been killed in air strikes on prisons in the Saada City. However, the death toll could rise further as more people are seriously injured.
Doctors Without Borders MSF stated that about 200 people injured in the prison attack had been admitted to Saada City Hospital and that hospital authorities could no longer admit patients due to lack of space in it.
Al Jazeera reports that airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition have recently increased. They say they are targeting military installations linked to the Houthi rebel movement. The coalitions launched an unexpected attack on its ally United Arab Emirates last Monday. In addition, missiles and drone strikes were carried out in the cities of Saudi Arabia. Following this the coalition then stepped up airstrikes against the Houthis.
The UAE is part of the Saudi-led coalition that has been fighting the rebels since 2015. This uncontrolled conflict has displaced millions of Yemenis and plunged them into extreme famine.
The coalition claimed responsibility for the attack in Hodeidah, a key port area in the devastated country.
