Morkel resigns as Pakistan bowling coach

Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel has resigned as Pakistan‍‍`s fast bowling coach, becoming the first personnel to exit in the aftermath of an underwhelming ODI World Cup performance by the side.

Morkel had signed up only in June on a six-month contract, with his first assignment in Sri Lanka for two Tests. He also oversaw an ODI series win against Afghanistan, followed by the Asia Cup and the showpiece event in India.

Pakistan‍‍`s pace department was severely hamstrung by Naseem Shah‍‍`s injury leading into the tournament, which blunted the attack to a great extent. Shaheen Afridi finished with 18 wickets but went through fixtures where he struggled for control and impact, particularly early in the innings.

Pakistan‍‍`s pacers still picked 50 wickets in this event - only South Africa and India bagged more, as their ouster from the tournament was more down to the lack of consistency from the top order.

Pakistan‍‍`s board is set to announce a replacement for him in due course as the team prepares for its next sojourn - a three-match Test series in Australia starting on December 14.
