The nomination of Awami League candidates in 72 seats under Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions for the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad election has been finalised.
The list of `Boat` symbol candidates for 72 constituencies was finalised at a meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Nomination Board held at Dhaka District Awami League office at Tejgaon in the capital on Thursday.
"Some sitting lawmakers have been dropped from the nomination list. The names of the candidates will be announced on November 25," Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said during a briefing following the meeting.
The board`s chairman Awami League President Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.
Quader said, "Candidates for 72 constituencies comprising 33 of Rangpur division and 39 in Rajshahi division have been finalised at today`s meeting. However, we will not publish the list until the finalisation of nomination in all seats. We will announce the list of nominated candidate together. The meeting has been adjourned till 10:00am on Friday."
He said, "I`m not aware of anything about the nomination board`s decision beyond the decision about our political leaders. Right now, I can`t say that how many existing members of parliament have been dropped. However, some have been dropped."
Referring the criteria followed by the nomination board in nominating candidates, the AL general secretary said priority has been given to the candidates who have acceptability to people. The names of the candidates will be published on November 25 next."
Regarding the `rebel candidates,` Quader said, "Let`s see first who are the rebel candidates, then we will decide."
According to the AL general secretary, a festive mood is now prevailing in the country centering the election. Alliance will be formed in various ways. It is very difficult to say who will form alliance with whom and when. Alliance may be formed before the election. There is enough time. List may come at any moment.
The ruling Awami League sold 3,362 nomination forms from November 18 to 21 for the upcoming elections.
On November 18, AL President Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the sale of the party`s nomination papers.
