Helena Jahangir freed from jail

Helena Jahangir, expelled Awami League leader and chairman of Joyjatra TV, has been released from Kashimpur Central Women Jail.

Kashimpur Central Women Jail‍‍`s acting senior super Md Shajahan Mia said documents for release of Helena Jahangir arrived from court on Wednesday night. After examining the documents, she was released at 10:45am on Thursday (November 16).

Helena Jahangir freed from jail 13 days after her arrest.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Md Asaduzzaman, judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge‍‍`s Court, granted bail to Helena Jahangir.

She was sent to Kashimpur Central Women‍‍`s Jail after she surrendered to Dhaka‍‍`s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Tofazzal Hossain‍‍`s court on November 2. She was given the job of writer inside the jail.

Helena was arrested from her Gulshan residence at night of July 29, 2021 after conducting raid. Later, four cases were filed against her. Police also interrogated her in those cases taking her on remand.

On March 20, a court sentenced Helena and four others to two years imprisonment in a fraud case filed with Dhaka‍‍`s Pallabi Police Station.

During the day of judgment, Helena and another accused were absent while three others were present.

IPTV Joyjatra Television‍‍`s Bhola district correspondent Abdur Rahman Tuhin filed the case on August 2, 2021.

In the case, it was alleged that Helena took Tk 54,000 from Tuhin to appoint him as the Bhola correspondent of Helena‍‍`s Joyjatra Television. As a correspondent, Abdur Rahman worked for several months but was not paid any salary. On the other hand, the television authorities took Tk 3,000 per month from him.
