Police, in separate drives at Uttara, Abdullahpur, Gazipur, and Tongi, arrested five teenage gang members for their alleged involvement in attacking a couple with a machetes in the city`s Uttara.
The arrested have been identified as Md. Mobarak Hossain, 25, Robi Roy, 22, Md. Alfaz Mia alias Shishir, 22, Sajeeb, 20, and Mehedi Hasan Saif, 24.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police of Uttara Division briefed newsmen about the arrest at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre today.
A team from Uttara Paschim Police Station arrested Shishir from Abdullahpur Paschimpara around 4 pm on Tuesday.
Based on Shishir`s information, police arrested Sajeeb from the Konabari area of Gazipur at 2 am today (Wednesday).
Acting on Sajeeb`s information, police arrested Mehedi Hasan Saif from Mazar Basti under Tongi West Police Station in Gazipur around 5 am today.
A motorcycle and two machetes used in the incident were seized from the bank of the Turag River around 10 am today.
When Mehboob Hasan, 37, along with his wife Nasrin Akhter Ifti, 28, was going home after shopping on Monday night, a gang of assailants attacked them with machetes. Hearing their hue and cry, local residents caught Md. Mobarak Hossain and Robi Roy and thrashed them.
Later, the duo was handed over to Uttara West Police Station.
Police also rescued the injured couple and admitted them to a local hospital.
Nasrin Akhter Ifti filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station.
