A court in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced former home minister Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Major (retd) Md Hafiz Uddin Ahmed to jail for 21 months in a case filed at Gulshan police station over sabotage.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury pronounced the judgement, said BNP lawyer Zia Uddin Zia.
Another accused Major (retd) Md Hanif was also sentenced to jail for 21 months in the case.
They were fined Tk 5,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer one month more in jail.
The other accused in the case MA Awal Khan, Md Russel, Moinul Islam, Md Babul Hossain alias Babu, Md Alamgir Hossain alias Raju were jailed for 42 months under two separate sections and were fined Tk 5,000. In default, all the five will have to serve one more month in prison.
Meanwhile, 11 accused were acquitted as their charges were not proved.
The arguments of the case ended on December 24.
According to the case documents, the accused on June 4, 2011, held an illegal rally in front of Mohakhali Wireless Gate Panir Tank area in the capital and obstructed police from conducting their duties. They also attacked policemen, vandalised and torched vehicles.
Police on April 29, 2014, submitted chargesheet in the case. The court on April 25, 2022, framed charges, initiating the trial officially. It examined seven out of 12 witnesses on different hearing dates.
