Bangladesh`s people are now facing great difficulties in meeting family expenses due to high inflation. Some 37 per cent of people meet their family expenses through borrowing. People living in urban areas rely on borrowing more than that of the people living in rural areas. Each family has borrowed Tk 73,980 on an average.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) stated it in a report on Wednesday (December 27). The final report titled "Household Income and Expenditure Survey" (HIES-2022) was released at Statistics Bhaban auditorium at Agargaon in the capital.
According to the report, income inequality in the country increased as the Gini-Coefficient widened to 0.499 in 2022 from 0.482 in 2016.
Planning Minister MA Mannan joined the event as the chief guest virtually. Brac`s Chairman Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, Statistics and Information Management Division`s Secretary Dr Shahnaz Arefin and General Economics Division`s Member Dr Md Kawsar Ahmed were present.
Chaired by BBS Director General Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, the keynote paper was presented by Project Director Mohiuddin Ahmed MPH.
The report reveals that each family earns Tk 32,500 a month on an average, while it spends Tk 31,500. It means each family saves Tk 1,000 a month.
The per capita household income increased to Tk 33,422 in 2022 from Tk 15,988 in 2016.
On the other hand, the per capita household expenditure increased to Tk 31,500 in 2022 from Tk 15,715 in 2016.
