A court in Rajshahi sentenced 13 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami to life term imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of a Jubo League leader in 2013.
Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Mohiduzzaman pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.
The convicts were Mokles Sardar, Sana Pramanik, Karim, Khalil, Moti Sardar, Mohsin, Rana, Anisur, Razzaque, Jarijis, Abul Kalam Azad, Md Kalam and Mizanur Rahman. Among them, Mokles Sardar was the former nayeb-e-amir of Natore`s Lalpur upazila unit of Jamaat, and others were leaders and activists of the party.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer three months more in jail. The other 54 accused were acquitted as the allegations brought against them were not proved.
Entajul Haque Babu, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, The leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami attacked the houses of local Awami League leaders in the upazila on February 28, 2013, soon after the announcement of Jamaat`s central nayeb-e-amir Delwar Hossain Sayedee`s death sentence.
They attacked the house of local AL leader Abdul Jalil and hacked his wife Mazeda Begum around 2:00 pm. Later, they set the house on fire.
At that time, Khairul Islam, joint secretary of Jubo League Lalpur upazila unit, rushed to the spot to save them. On his way, another group of Jamaat men hacked him to death.
A case was filed by Khairul`s brother Shahinur Rahman with Lalpur Police Station accusing 60 people.
After that, the police station sub-inspector Anisur Rahman submitted a charge-sheet against 67 people to the court.
