Ganatantra Mukti Dibash will be observed in the country on Wednesday marking the fall of autocratic ruler HM Ershad in 1990.
On December 6, 1990, military ruler Ershad stepped down in the face of a mass upsurge and handed power over to a caretaker government ending his nine years of autocratic rule which began through grabbing power on March 24, 1982.
Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations observed the day with various programmes.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a message on the occasion greeting all people as ‘sentinels of democracy, reports UNB’.
In her message, she said “The anti-democratic forces are still hatching conspiracy against democracy in various ways.”
She also urged all to work together to strengthen the foundation of democracy through resisting all conspiracies and work for the development of the country and welfare of the people to build a hunger, poverty free Sonar Bangla as dreamt by the Father of the Nation.
