A Sirajganj court on Tuesday sentenced a police constable to life imprisonment in a case of killing a housewife at Ullapara upazila in the district in 2020.
At the same time, the court also fined him Tk 20,000, in default, he will have to suffer one year more in jail.
Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Mohammad Erfan Ullah handed down the verdict in presence of the convict.
The convicted is Monirul Islam, 30, hailed from Char Kaliganj village under Panchkroshi union of the upazila.
Advocate Waskarni Lockett, additional public prosecutor of the court, confirmed it.
According to the case statement, after joining police in 2018, the Monirul got married to Suravi Khatun, 22, from his neighboring area. After marriage, he used to abuse his wife physically and mentally. Meanwhile, he developed an extramarital affair with another woman.
On August 27, 2020, Monirul took Suravi to his home from her father`s house at night. The next day, local people spotted the body of the victim in a pond near the house.
Later, on information, police recovered the body from the pond.
The victim Suravi`s father Shafiqul Islam filed a case against four people including Monirul Islam, his brother Monnaf Hossain, and mother Moneka Begum in this connection.
After investigating the case, police accused Monirul Islam and filed a charge sheet to the court on January 13, 2021.
The court today delivered the verdict after taking depositions of 23 witnesses.
