The US assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu has issued letters to three major parties of Bangladesh--Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party.
US ambassador in Dhaka Peter Haas on Monday handed over the letter to Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader at the JP chairman`s office at Banani in the capital.
Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque said they received a letter from US ambassador .
Mujibul Haque said it is mentioned in the letter that the US expects a free, fair, neutral and inclusive election in Bangladesh. The letter also calls for a dialogue without any condition.
Letters have been given to Awami League and BNP too, he quoted the US ambassador as saying.
He said, "The US ambassador in Dhaka Peter Haas has come with a letter. He has handed over the letter to our party chairman. Peter Haas said the same letter has been given to Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party."
Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed to media that they have received the letter from Peter Haas.
Awami League`s Office Secretary Biplop Barau said they had not received such a letter yet.
Donald Lu`s letter comes just ahead of the announcement of the election schedule – which may come sometime in the first half of November.
Political turmoil has engulfed the country since October 28 when opposition demonstrations were marked by clashes, deaths and violence.
