The Minimum Wage Board has published a gazette fixing the minimum wage for ready-made garment workers at Tk 12,500.

It was mentioned in the gazette signed by Minimum Wage Board chairman Liaqut Ali Molla, on Sunday (November 12) night.

Earlier on November 7 last, State Minister for Labour Munnujan Sufian said at her secretariat office in the capital that minimum wage for readymade garment workers was fixed at Tk 12,500. The decision was taken at the sixth meeting of the Minimum Wage Board.

She said, "We have done this at the directive of the Prime Minister. The minimum wage will rise by 56.25 per cent. It will increase from Tk 8,000 to Tk 12,500. Besides, there will be a five per cent increment every year."

However, the Garment Workers Movement for Raising Wages, an alliance of the organisations involved in movement for increasing wage of apparel workers, have rejected the Tk 12,500 minimum wage. Instead they demanded Tk 25,000 minimum wage for readymade garment workers.
