The dangerous poisonous snake of the Arabian Sea `Yellow Bellied` is now roaming on the beach of Cox`s Bazar. A poisonous snake of this species was found at the town`s Samitypara Beach Point on Friday (August 11) night.
Earlier in June, a yellow bellied snake was spotted at Sugandha Point beach in the town.
Meanwhile, panic has prevailed on Digha Beach in West Bengal, India for about three weeks about the snake. Digha Beach is located just opposite the Cox`s Bazar coast of the Bay of Bengal. Due to the lack of anti-venom for this snake, special precautions have been issued in India.
Cox`s Bazar district administration`s beach staff supervisor Mahbub said he came across the yellow bellied snake while on duty at Samitypara beach point around 11:30 pm on Friday. Later, he saw the snake moving towards the sea. At that time, he took video footage and some pictures of the snake.
According to sources, the `yellow bellied` snake is one of the eight most dangerous sea snakes in the world. The death rate of this snake bite is 80 per cent.
Cox`s Bazar Medical College Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Department Assistant Professor Dr Shahjahan Nazir said, "It is a highly venomous species of snake, belonging to the subfamily Hydrophinae (sea snakes). The human body becomes paralyzed due to the bite of this snake. Kidney, heart gets affected and gradually stops working. Urine color may also change. Therefore, there is a need to be careful about this snake, including fishermen.``
Chattogram University Zoology Department Professor Dr Manjurul Kibria said, "Yellow bellied snakes are carnivores and they only eat fish. They can spend up to three hours continuously underwater. Their entire life cycle is spent in the sea. The average length of an adult yellow bellied snake is 3 feet.
