Dengue claims 13 more lives, 1,673 hospitalised

Thirteen more patients died from dengue in 24 hours till 8:00am on Friday as the country grapples with a record outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

Of the 13 deaths, eight were reported in the Dhaka city and five were from outside the capital. Besides, at least, 1,673 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals and clinics during the 24-hour period, according to a press release sent from the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday. Of the hospitalised patients, 478 were from Dhaka and 1,195 were from outside of Dhaka.

The press release said 2,029 dengue patients got release from the hjospitals across the country over the last 24 hours. Of them, 570 patients were from Dhaka and 1,459 were outside of Dhaka.

Dengue has so far claimed at least 1,148 lives this year. Of them, 717 were from Dhaka and 431 were outside from Dhaka. Nearly 233,531 people were infected this year, making this the deadliest year since the first recorded epidemic in 2000.

According to the DGHS data, 8,617 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country.

A total of 223,779 patients have so far been released from hospitals across the country this year.

There is no vaccine or drug that specifically treats dengue, which is common in South Asia during the June-to-September monsoon season when the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the carrier of the deadly virus, thrives in stagnant water.
