Professor Dr Sadeka Halim of the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University, has been appointed as the first female vice-chancellor of Jagannath University (JnU).
She was made the sixth vice-chancellor of the university for four years by the approval of President Mohammed Shahabuddin and according to Section 10(1) of Jagannath University Act, 2005, said the Ministry of Education in a gazette notification on Thursday.
The position of vice-chancellor at Jagannath University fell vacant following the death of former vice-chancellor Professor Imdadul Huque due to cancer on November 11 last.
Professor Sadeka Halim holds the distinction of being the country`s first female Information Commissioner and has been a member of the National Education Policy Formulation Committee 2010.
Sadeka Halim passed SSC from Udayan School and HSC from Holy Cross College in Dhaka. She then completed Hons and Master in Sociology from Dhaka University.
She began her teaching career at Dhaka University in 1988 and then earned second Master and PhD from McGill University of Canada. Then she completed post-doctorate from Bath University of UK under Commonwealth scholarship.
She hails from village Kunjasree in Alkora union under Chouddagram upazila in Cumilla district. Her father, Fazlul Halim Chowdhury, was also the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University from 1976 to 1983.
