Former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and independent candidate of Chattogram-10 constituency Mohammad Manjur Alam has started election campaign in his respective constituency.
He exchanged views with women`s gathering and people of various professions in North Agrabad Ward of the city on Thursday.
During the campaign, he held public relations and road meetings at Chowmuhani, Charia Para, Mistripara, Panwala Para, Ward Office, Ranggipara, Munshipara, Molla Para, Munchurabad, Wapda Colony and Askarabad.
In the programme, independent candidate Monjur Alam called for choosing an honest and qualified candidate in 12th parliamentary election slated for January 7.
He said, “I have become an independent candidate to protect the voting rights of the people in my constituency. I have full faith and trust in the voters”.
Earlier, Manjur, former adviser to the BNP chairperson, was elected CCC mayor in 2010 by surprisingly defeating his political guru late AL-candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury by a large margin.
In 2015 mayoral election, BNP-backed Manjur Alam pulled out of the mayoral race a few hours into polling day alleging that massive rigging was taking place.
However, in a more dramatic turn of events, he announced his retirement from politics, without citing a specific reason for his decision.
