Jhenaidah Swechchhasebak League leader shot dead

A leader of Swechchhasebak League was reportedly shot to death by a group of miscreants at village Shura under Harinakunda upazila in Jhenaidah district Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Hossain, 43, son of Nantu Miah, a resident of the village, was a former general secretary of Harinakunda municipality unit of Swechchhasebak League, the volunteer associate organisation of the ruling Awami League. He was also a retired Army officer.

Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Harinakunda police station, said that a group of miscreants attacked Shamim while he was sitting on the bank of a pond adjacent to his home at around 9:30pm.

They shot in Shamim’s chest and hacked him with locally made sharp weapons and left the place, leaving Shamim critically injured.

Locals rescued the victim and rushed him to Harinakunda Upazila Health Complex where the attending doctors declared him dead, the police official said.

The official said police later sent the body to Jhenaidah General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

They are investigating the matter, said OC, adding that legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident.
