Chattogram`s Banshkhali`s Chambol union parishad (UP) chairman Mujibul Huq Chowdhury who threatened to beat US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas has replied to a showcause notice served on him by the Local Government Division asking why he should not be suspended.
Deputy director (Local Government) Lutfun Nahar of Chattogram district administration on Wednesday (November 22) confirmed about the reply to the show-cause notice.
She said show-cause notice was served on Mujibul Huq Chowdhury on November 12.
He was asked to reply to the notice within five working days. Then he replied to that notice on Wednesday.
Mujibul Huq Chowdhury, also convener of the union unit of the Awami League, threatened the US ambassador at a public meeting in Banskhali on November 6.
He threatened to beat up Ambassador Haas publicly and also made insulting remarks against the diplomat, which were published in different newspapers on November 8.
Later, the US State department termed the threat to beat US ambassador Peter Haas `deeply unhelpful`.
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedanta Patel termed Chittagong`s Awami League leader`s public threat to beat US Ambassador Peter Haas as `non-cooperative behaviour.`
Then, Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) at a meeting on November 10 decided to take action against Mujibul Huq Chowdhury on charges of breaching party discipline. The meeting was held at Ganabhaban with Prime Minister and party president Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
On November 12, the Local Government Division in Chattogram served a showcause notice on Mujibul Huq seeking answer.
The notice stated that "Your (Mujibul Huq Chowdhury) remarks are humiliating for the nation and have tarnished the image of Bangladesh in the world. You are requested to answer why necessary measures would not be taken against you as per section (34) 4 of Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009."
