The supplementary duty imposed on mobile phone SIM cards and broadband internet has been withdrawn, says the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
"The increased supplementary duty on mobile SIM/RIM services and the newly imposed duty on ISP services have been withdrawn to support ongoing digitisation efforts, promote a tech-savvy youth generation and boost online activities,” NBR said in a notification on Wednesday (January 22).
On January 9, the government announced a 10% supplementary duty on broadband services, raising concerns among operators and customers. If implemented, a Tk 500 broadband connection would have cost at least Tk 577.
The additional 3% supplementary duty on mobile services would have increased the tax on a Tk 100 recharge to over Tk 56. This included 29.80 paisa in supplementary duty, VAT, and surcharges. The government would have collected 56.30 paisa from every Tk 100 recharge.
