Senior Secretary of Commerce Ministry Tapan Kanti Ghosh on Friday said the government would import eggs soon if the price of the low-cost source of protein is not at a logical level.
"The government is not against businessmen. But the businessmen also have to avoid excessive greed. If it is not possible to keep the price of eggs at a reasonable level within a short period, the idea of importing eggs will be
considered," he said.
The secretary said this while speaking as the chief guest at a Shadow Parliament on "Institutional Management in Ensuring Consumer Rights" at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) auditorium in the city, BSS reports.
Director General of the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP) HM Safikuzzaman was present as special guest with Chairman of Debate for Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran in the chair.
DNCRP and Debate for Democracy organised the event.
Tapan Kanti Ghosh said strengthening of co-operatives at the producer level will increase production and farmers will not be deprived of fair prices.
Then, they will be able to deliver their own products to the consumer level, he added.
